If you are in the job market you need to be on LinkedInOn July 16, Forbes magazine published a very important cover story for job seekers. The article is titled, How LinkedIn Has Turned Your Resume into a Cash Machine, and it details how LinkedIn is turning the social network’s 161M member profiles into the “21st century version of a little black book that no recruiter can live without.” Every day more and more recruiters and HR managers are using LinkedIn exclusively when searching for professional talent. As a job hunter, these are the salient points from the Forbes article that you need to know:

1. Thousands of companies are using LinkedIn’s Recruiter product to find qualified job applicants

LinkedIn specializes in selling services to people who buy talent for a living, the very people that you need to read your resume.

2. The stock prices of many recruiting firms that continue to search for talent the old way are falling.

Everybody knows about and uses Monster.com, but its stock price is down 81%. That’s because online job boards aren’t nearly as effective as they once were – so much of their traffic has migrated to LinkedIn.

3. Recruiters are able to find better qualified job applicants faster and quicker with LinkedIn.

The VP for global talent acquisition at Adobe Systems, Jeff Vijungco, was able to find 50 solid candidates for a technical job in a few hours using LinkedIn. Doing the talent search the old way would have taken weeks.

4. LinkedIn’s advanced search capabilities are invaluable in finding job candidates with unique characteristics.

The Forbes article details the efforts of one recruiter to find an accounting manager with an entrepreneurial spirit. Using LinkedIn’s multistate search, she was able to target accountants who had worked in similar companies. She found the right candidate within days. If you are looking for a job, you need to have a profile on LinkedIn – it’s free after all. Be sure to include your job history for the past 10 years and a professional headshot on your profile.
